Chapter Ten

That stuff only happens in the movies.” Maggie’s dad tossed the beer cap in the trash can in the corner of his small kitchen, handed the bottle to Maggie, and opened another bottle for himself.

“Yeah. Well, not this time. Her name is Cassidy.” Maggie followed him into the living room and sat on the right side of the love seat—the side she knew didn’t sag.

She’d offered numerous times to buy him a new love seat, but he refused. “No sense replacing it when it still has one good side,” he’d told her.

He sat in the recliner next to her. It was his chair, and everyone knew not to sit in it.

Maggie suspected that it was well-worn in the shape of his butt.

“How did this happen?”

“We don’t know exactly. Some mix-up at the clinic we both used. We haven’t talked to them, yet.”

“Why not? Honey, this is serious stuff. Nothing to mess around with. They’re playing with people’s lives.”

Maggie didn’t point out that she was well aware of all that. “We will. I need to talk to Hannah about it and set up a time with her. I think we should hire a lawyer.”

“That’s a good idea.” He took a long swig of his beer. “So, I have another granddaughter, huh? Well, I’ll be damned. Tell me about her.”

Maggie filled him in on any details she knew about Cassidy, including the fact that she looked like Maggie and shared her love of horses. “Are you all right with this, Dad?”

“Sure. I love Jean’s girls. I’m sure I’ll love Cassidy too. When do I get to meet her?”

“I’m not sure. It’s important that we give her time to get used to all this before we go springing a lot of relatives on her.”

“Good point. I didn’t think of that.”

There had been a lot to think about since this whole thing started. Cassidy’s feelings. Hannah’s feelings. Her feelings. Her very confusing feelings about Hannah.

Maggie hadn’t been sure what to expect when she told her father, but his mild reaction surprised her. He seemed to take it all in stride. She was glad he wanted to meet Cassidy. And even more glad that he was willing to wait. He was right about one thing. She and Hannah needed to confront the fertility clinic and get some answers.

She sent Hannah a text as soon as she got home. Can we set up a time to get together? We should talk about a few things.

Hannah finished pouring fresh water into a large container of roses just as her phone pinged. She wiped her hands on the apron tied around her waist, pulled the phone from her pocket. and stared at the text. Oh shit. Maggie wanted to talk. Hannah was sure it was about that kiss. She had some apologizing to do. She could do that. If Maggie expected an explanation, Hannah wasn’t sure she could give her one. She typed out a response, erased it, typed again, and hit send.

Hannah: Sure. When?

Maggie: I’m free this evening or tomorrow evening if that works.
